The sun shone down on throngs of happy families, friends, and fans at Cartan Field on Saturday afternoon, as the Oaks won their final game of the season, 5-3. Their final records are 9-31 overall and 5-17 in GSAC play.Â
Salute to Seniors
It was Senior Day for the Oaks today, with 12 players saying their goodbyes to Menlo: Logan Snow, Matt Leong, Tony Masetti, Cooper Paulino, Evan Wilcox, Joey Selvaggio, Landon Evilsizor-White, Richard Kiel, Sean Riley Moran, Steve Soto, Tyler Kennedy, and Jaxon Hotta.Â
Center fielder Joey Selvaggio got the Oaks going with a no-doubt home run in the bottom of the 3rd inning that gave Menlo a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, third baseman Sean Pettener widened that lead with a 2-run blast that also brought Jonathan Charboneau across the plate.Â
In the bottom of the 8th, with the game tied 3-3, catcher Matt Leong stepped up and ripped a double to left-center field that scored Sean Pettener and Jaxon Hotta. In the top of the 9th, Tyler Kennedy took the mound and gave Vanguard no chance at a comeback, striking out 2 batters and allowing no hits, walks, or runs.Â
Starter Logan Snow was excellent throughout his 5.2 innings of work, allowing just 1 hit and 1 run while striking out 7. He ended the season with 46 strikeouts in 46.0 innings for a clean K/9 of 9.00.
Season In Review
With all 40 games in the books, Menlo ended the season with a total of 216 runs scored for an average of 5.4 runs per game.Â
Infielder Tony Masetti played in all 40 games of the season, and completed a team-leading 141 at-bats. All told, he drew an impressive 32 walks, by far the most of any Oak and tied for the third-most among all GSAC players. He finished with the most hits among Menlo players, with 46, the best batting average, at .326, and the most runs scored, at 38.
First baseman and designated hitter Sage Pera led Menlo in RBIs, with 41, and home runs, with 11. He was also tied for the most doubles, with 8. His slugging percentage, of .613, was the best on the team.Â
Speedy outfielder Erik Quinzon led Menlo in stolen bases, with 10.Â
On the mound, starter Brock Moore finished with 70 strikeouts across 51.1 innings pitched for an incredible strikeouts-per-9-innings rate of 12.27. He also allowed just 2 home runs.
The pitcher with the most appearances was Mr. Menlo himself, the Australian reliever Richard Kiel. Across 24 appearances, he pitched 45.0 innings, striking out 37 and notching 2 saves.
Up Next
It will be a summer of practice and planning for head coach Alex Hoover and his assistants, Trent Verlin and Nick Healey. With a solid foundation in place for 2024, the Oaks will look to strengthen and strategize to make their mark on the GSAC next season.
