BASEBALL DROPS RAIN-FILLED GAME TO CSU EAST BAY, 11-4

HAYWARD, CA

A game originally slated to be played at Cartan Field, but which was moved to Pioneer Field due to rain, ended in defeat for the Oaks by a final score of 11-4. Their record now stands at 2-3.

The highlight of Menlo's day came in the top of the 8th inning. With 1 out, senior Sage Pera stepped to the plate and shot a no-doubter over the right-field fence. It was the first hit of Pera's time at Menlo, but was worth the wait. Head coach Alex Hoover will hope that the first home run of Menlo's young season opens the floodgates for the power hitters in his lineup.

With a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the 3rd inning, second baseman Anthony Masetti notched his team-leading 6th RBI so far this season. Sean Pettener has the second-most, and brought his season total to 3 today with an RBI single in the top of the 3rd.

The defensive highlight of the game came in the bottom of the 5th inning. With a runner on 2nd and 2 outs, third baseman Sean Pettener corralled a ball hit on the left side of the infield and applied a diving tag to the runner attempting to move from 2nd to 3rd. It is precisely those razor-sharp reflexes that make Pettener a crucial asset in Menlo's hot corner.

Weather permitting, the Oaks and Pioneers will play a third game tomorrow, Sunday, February 5th, at Pioneer Field in Hayward. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
