ATHERTON, CA
An exciting Friday afternoon game at Cartan Field saw Menlo score 1 run in the 7th and 3 in the 8th to cut into Westmont's 6-0 lead, but the score remained 6-4 until the final out was recorded. Menlo's overall record is 4-12, with an 0-4 start to GSAC competition.
Hits Up and Down the Lineup
Seven Oaks recorded a hit in the game, which allowed the team to maintain an offensive presence even when down by 6 runs. The biggest of those hits came in the bottom of the 8th, when outfielder Jonathan Charboneau launched a double into deep right-center field. That knock brought Anthony Masetti and Sean Pettener across the plate, and moved Charboneau into a tie for the team lead in runs batted in, with 10 to his name.
Menlo's 2 other RBIs came from Erik Quinzon, with a single that scored Masetti in the bottom of the 7th, and Sean Pettener, whose single in the bottom of the 8th scored Blake Dompier.
Second-baseman Anthony Masetti also had a good day at the plate, going 1-2 while showing good discipline and drawing 2 walks. Masetti is the only Oak with double-digit walks so far this season; he has 14 in 16 games.
Sharing the Strikeouts
Menlo pitchers totaled 9 strikeouts in the game, with 6 for starter Brock Moore and 1 for each of 3 subsequent relievers.
Moore has 21 strikeouts so far this season, with a K/9 rate of 8.86. As is typical of the 6'6" right-hander, his fastball reached into the 90-mile-per-hour range on multiple occasions today.
The Oaks' best performance on the mound came from reliever Robley Corsi III, who pitched in the tops of the 7th and 8th innings. Corsi took care of business in just 23 pitches, striking out 1 batter and allowing no walks.
