Atherton, CA- Coming off a 0-0 tie against Lincoln University last weekend, the Oaks came into today's GSAC Conference opener looking to generate offense against the visiting OUAZ Spirit. To say the team was locked in is an understatement as Menlo controlled the pitch for 90 minutes, on both sides of the ball. As the game clock hit zero coach Keith Lambert's team would be on the winning side of a 5-1 victory to kickstart conference play!
Firing On All Cylinders
It did not take long for the Oaks to find the back of the net in this one. At the 1:46 mark Isak Haukefier would score his third goal of the season with a well placed header. Senior Levin Ledergerber would set Haukefier up with a well placed cross into the box. Ledergerber would finish the evening with two assists giving him a team high three on the year. It wouldn't take much longer before freshman Roy Rosenberg would chip in a goal of his own with a beautiful shot that would be perfectly placed just beyond the goalies reach.
By the 16 minute mark Johan Mendoza Aguilar would receive another well placed cross from Ledergerber and perfectly place a ball once again just out of OUAZ's reach. The Oaks would go roughly 30 minutes before getting back to their high scoring ways as Axel Valle would add a goal of his own, launching the ball well outside of the box for an impressive goal. Valle now leads the Oaks with four goals on the season. Menlo's final goal would come from Sebastian Lopez for his first score of the season. Lopez was once again well outside of the box as he would place the ball perfectly into the upper right corner.
Defense Continues to Shine
While the focus is firmly placed on Menlo's multiple scoring plays, the Oaks defense continues to remain steadfast. Coming into today's competition the Oaks had only conceded three goals. While OUAZ was able to get on the board late thanks to a penalty kick, it was another great showing by Menlo's defense. Starting goalkeeper Jo Krumsvik did a great job halting any momentum OUAZ would make with multiple great plays to keep the Spirit in check. The defensive line of David Stuber, Dennis Vanin & Donald Holliday did a great job of limiting OUAZ's opportunities as the Spirit only allowed four shots with only two being on goal.
Up Next…
While Menlo will be feeling good after such a decisive victory there is little time to rest on their laurels with the Arizona Christian Firestorm coming to town this Saturday, September 30th for a 1PM match start. The Firestorm are coming off a 2-3 defeat at the hands of the Jessup Warriors and will be looking for their first GSAC victory. After today's performance, the Oaks are looking primed to send both of their Arizona rivals back home with a loss!
