ARCATA, CA – Menlo Women's Soccer opened CCAA play on the road Friday afternoon, falling 1-2 to the Lumberjacks of Cal Poly Humboldt. The Oaks took an early second-half lead behind a goal from Olivia Sams, but Humboldt answered with two goals later in the half to claim the conference-opening victory. They now face their sights towards their next road matchup against the Bobcats of Chico State.

Oaks Battle in CCAA Opener
The opening half remained tightly contested, with both teams working to create chances as the Oaks and Lumberjacks entered halftime scoreless. Menlo came out of the halftime break with renewed pressure, quickly creating opportunities in front of the Humboldt goal. Leilani Phillips tested the Lumberjacks' goalkeeper early in the second half before Aubrey Dollins' shot set up Sams, who found the back of the net in the 50th minute to put the Oaks ahead 1-0. Jacky Vasquez Lopez and Sams each added shots shortly after the opening goal as Menlo looked to build on its advantage.
Humboldt responded with an equalizer in the 60th minute before adding the eventual game-winning goal in the 82nd minute. Menlo continued to compete throughout the final minutes, while Cordes and the Oaks' defensive unit kept the game within one possession. The Oaks finished with three shots on goal compared to three for the Lumberjacks, while Humboldt held an 8-6 edge in total shots.

Menlo will look to bounce back on Sunday, September 20, when the Oaks face the Bobcats of Chico State. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 am as Menlo continues CCAA play on the road.
