Menlo’s Inaugural CCAA Matchup Goes Way Of Golden Eagles

LOS ANGELES – Officially competing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association for the first time on Friday evening, Menlo Women's Volleyball could not rally back against Cal State LA, dropping the conference contest 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-16) inside University Gym.

Oaks Highlights
-Shaylee Ungos led the way for Menlo with seven kills
-11 assists from Makenna Mello served as a team high
-The only Oak with double-digit digs in all seven matches thus far, Michelle Mlikan finished with 10

Kills Come From Nine Different Oaks
From an 18-4 lead in the opening set, Cal State LA was hit by a 7-1 run from Menlo that featured three kills from senior setter Shaylee Ungos plus a service ace by junior outside hitter Michelle Mlikan, but ended up rallying late for the 25-13 final.

A quintet of Oaks had kills by the middle stages of the second set yet the Golden Eagles' early advantage once again pushed them toward a 25-14 result. CSULA used a 5-0 run to create separation in the third frame and, though junior setter/libero Rio Sandaiji had three kills over a six-point span, Cal State LA put the finishing touches on a conference victory by way of the 25-16 score.

Up Next
A matchup with No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona awaits the Oaks tomorrow at 2 p.m. in what will be the final road contest before Menlo's Sept. 18 home opener.
