Coach Joey Martinez Steps Down as Menlo Men's Wrestling Head Coach After Historic 16 Seasons, Named Director of Wrestling

ATHERTON, Calif.Menlo Athletics announced today that Head Men's Wrestling Coach Joey Martinez will be stepping down from his role as head coach and transitioning into a new position as Director of Wrestling, where he will oversee both the men's and women's wrestling programs.  
 
Martinez closes his head coaching tenure on a historic high, leading the Oaks to their second consecutive national championship title this season, where the Oaks claimed six individual national champions and nine All-Americans, further solidifying the program's dominance.
 
"Joey Martinez has built Menlo Wrestling into one of the premier programs in the country," said Vice President for Athletics Keith Spataro. "His leadership, passion, and commitment to excellence have elevated every student-athlete who has come through this program. We are thrilled to have him continue shaping the future of Menlo Wrestling in this new role."

Martinez, who just completed his 16th season at the helm, leaves behind a legacy that has redefined the Menlo Wrestling program. As only the second head coach in program history, he transformed the Oaks into an everlasting powerhouse.
 
Throughout his tenure, Martinez's impact has been nothing short of remarkable. He has built a championship culture highlighted by:
  • 16 Individual National Champions
  • 60 All-Americans
  • 2 National Championships, and another 3 podium finishes, in 2020, 2023, and 2024
  • 6 Conference Championships

In his new role as Director of Wrestling, Martinez will oversee Menlo's men's and women's NCAA programs continuing to guide the Oaks' growth and success at every level.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead this program for the past 16 years," said Martinez. "Menlo Wrestling is family to me, and I'm proud of what we've built together. I'm excited to continue supporting our student-athletes and coaches in this new role and help take all of our programs to even greater heights."

Menlo College President Steven Weiner added: "Joey Martinez has spent nearly two decades proving that with the right leadership, there is no limit to what Menlo student-athletes can achieve. He is a true Menlo icon, and we are fortunate to have his championship DNA guiding the future of our entire wrestling department."

Menlo Athletics will begin a national search for the next Head Men's Wrestling Coach immediately.
