Oaks Battle No. 10 UC San Diego in Home Test at Haynes-Prim

ATHERTON, CA – The Menlo Men's Volleyball program had a quick turnaround after last night's victory as they took on No. 10 nationally ranked UC San Diego inside of Haynes-Prim Pavilion but fell in straight sets.
 
Set-by-Set Recap
The Oaks opened the match with confidence, trading points with the Tritons through the early stages of the first set. Mathias Durfee saw the starting lineup and led the Oaks in the first set in kills with four. Durfee was joined by Max Jarrett at the net, as both recorded two block assists in the set. Trailing 20-19 late in the set,t the Oaks forced the Tritons to earn its final points, but the UC San Diego closed on a small run to take the opener 25-21.
 
The second set saw UC San Diego's efficiency start to show, with the Oaks struggling to slow down their offensive momentum as the Tritons hit a .565 hitting percentage in the frame.  The Oaks found points in Alexandre Ferdani, Vojtech Simunek, Garrett Hockman, while Xavier Cordova contributed offensively in transition. However, the Tritons' offense proved to be too much as they took the set 25-16.
 
The Oaks decided to sub in setter Gabriel Ocasio Lopez to change the starting lineup, looking to spark momentum in the third set. Mark Ensalaco delivered 4 kills on a .500 hitting percentage while Lopez earned 9 assists on the night. Cordova and Simunek each added key points to keep Oaks competitive up until the midway point. The Tritons' continued their offensive rhythm, hitting a .562 to secure the sweep with a 25-17 win.

  • Mathias Durfee led the Oaks in kills with 7 and total blocks with 3 through the three sets played.
  • Xavier Cordova was second to Durfee in total kills, collecting five while out of position once again.
  • Joshua Friedman dished out 13 assists in only two sets played
