Cordova Leads Offense to Open MPSF Conference Play with Sweep over Bobcats

ATHERTON, CA – The Oaks opened MPSF Conference play in commanding fashion inside of Haynes-Prim Pavilion, sweeping UC Merced in straight sets 25-19, 25-19, 25-21.

Set-By-Set Recap
The Oaks would climb to a comfortable lead early in the set to begin the match, with efforts from Xavier Cordova, Mathias Durfee, and Alexandre Ferdani offensively to force the Bobcats into multiple errors. The Oaks used a balanced attack along with strong serving to keep their lead to close out a well put 25-19 set to grab early control of the match.

The second set showcased Menlo's most efficient showing of the night, recording 12 kills total along with 2 aces to hold UC Merced's offense to a .091. Heading into the final points, Kai Van Haaren would switch up the serving rotation to force UC Merced into a timeout as well as multiple attacking errors to give the Oaks a bigger cushion. A kill from Ferdani and an ace from Cordova would seal the second set and take a 2-0 advantage.

In the final set, UC Merced made its strongest push, as both teams traded points all the way through the middle of the set. While behind, Menlo would go on a quick three-point swing to retake their lead at 14-12. The Oaks would slowly but surely extend their lead after the rally, with UC Merced scrambling to get any sort of momentum. A final kill from Cordova sealed the 25-21 victory and completed the sweep in Menlo's MPSF opener.
