Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Riley J. Siason

Menlo Battles Tough Against No. 7 BYU in Three Sets

PROVO, UT – Menlo Men's Volleyball took nationally ranked no. 7 BYU on the road, falling in straight sets.

In set one, the Oaks would come out aggressive to begin the match. Taking an early lead and trading points to stay within striking distance throughout the frame. The Oaks offense had come together with Joshua Friedman dishing out 16 assists while Alexandre Ferdani leading the pack with 6 kills. Xavier Cordova also saw the starting lineup and despite being listed as a setter, Cordova played out of position and trailed behind his teammate in kills in the set with five of his own. The Oaks kept the pressure on offensively, but BYU closed the set on a final three point run to take the set 25-21.

The second frame saw the Cougars defense tighten up while also raising their efficiency on offense. The Oaks only recorded 11 kills in the set, struggling to find a rhythm with Xavier Cordova leading the pack with four kills. BYU would go on a mid-set run to create separation, and the Oaks were unable to recover as the Cougars claimed the second set 25-18.

The third set featured multiple momentum swings along with several lead changes. Both teams' offense struggled to get anything going, totaling 22 total errors. The Oak's would find their momentum at the net, earning 4.5 total team blocks along with a couple service aces. Despite the Oaks fighting late in the set to get a lead, BYU would battle tough to earn their final points to take the set, mirroring the first 25-21 to end the night.
