Early Offensive Start Sees Oaks Battle BYU in Three Sets

PROVO, UT – In the second match in a two-game series against nationally ranked no. 7 BYU, the Oaks would show grit and energy in the George Albert Smith Fieldhouse despite falling to the Cougars in straight sets.

Match Recap
The Oaks best set of the night came in the first, opening the match with strong offensive rhythm with Mark Ensalaco leading the pack with 4 kills and Joshua Friedman dishing out 9 assists. The Oaks totaled 14 kills on 37 attempts in the first framed and matched the Cougars point-for-point deep into the set. With nine tie scores and two lead changes, Menlo fought to a 23-23 deadlock before giving up a couple attacking errors to give BYU the first set.

The second set saw the Oaks struggle to get anything going offensively, only hitting a .150 hitting percentage across five Oaks tallying kills. The Oaks would also pick up three total blocks with Vojtech Simunek participating in each of those at the net. The Oaks, however, would stay within striking distance of the Cougars, but BYU would create a late push to secure the second frame 25-18.

In the third and final set, the Oaks continued to battle, highlighted by four efficient kills by Ensalaco and Simunek. BYU would use a decisive mid-set run to create separation against the Oaks. Refusing to fold, Menlo battled through extended rallies to force BYU to work for the final points. Despite the resilience and a late push, BYU closed the match with a 25-15 third set.
