Lawler Dishes Out 42 Assists in Four-Set Victory Over CUI

IRVINE, CA – Menlo Men's Volleyball took down the Golden Eagles of Concordia University-Irvine for the third time this season in a four-set thriller. The Oaks overcame a slow start with multiple offensive adjustments and standout individual performances to take control of the match.

Set-by-Set Recap
The Oaks struggled to find momentum to start the match. CUI would hold the Oaks to only a .206 hitting percentage, capitalizing on the Oaks' offensive errors to take the first set 25-17.

The Oaks would regroup in the second set and responded with authority. Increasing their offensive output with a .308 hitting percentage, Menlo also held CUI to a .091 hitting percentage. The difference in the match came from the serving line, where the Oaks would earn 5 aces in the match with Wojciech Nowak earning three aces in a five-point run. This was the momentum needed for the Oaks to get things going to take the set 25-16, tying the game to one set a piece.

The third set was the most exciting out of the match, seeing fourteen tied scores. Each side of the ball was fighting desperately trying to gain any sort of rhythm, but It was the Oak's blocking that proved to be the difference as the Oaks took the third set in extra points 27-25.

Menlo would build on an early lead to close out the final set strong, with their biggest lead being 7 points ahead. With CUI going on a couple of runs, the Oaks' lead proved to be too much for CUI to overcome, forcing the Golden Eagles to 4 attacking errors to close out the night 25-20.

Key Oak Performers
William Lawler: Lawler would end up being the Oak's main facilitator and dished out an incredible 42 assists while collecting six digs and two blocks. A standout performance on both ends of the court.

Mustafa Selçuk Uyar: Posting 20 kills on the night, Uyar would lead the team in kills and points, ending the night with 22.5 points

Wojciech Nowak: another standout performance, Nowak has been in peak form as the season comes to an end. Tallying 15 kills, 10 digs, four aces, and two blocks, Nowak continues to become the Oak's key figure on the roster. Nowak also ties Menlo's record for most aces in a single season with 54, aiming to break that record in the final match of the regular season tomorrow.
