Oaks Win in Four Against Vanguard Behind Nowak’s MPSF Season Breaking Ace Record

ATHERTON, CA – The Menlo Men's Volleyball team returned to Haynes-Prim Pavilion to face a familiar foe that is also transitioning from the NAIA in the Lions of Vanguard University. The Oaks would take down the Lions in four sets with Wojciech Nowak breaking this season's most aces in singles game for the MPSF.

Oaks Outpacing the Lions
The opening set saw a tight back-and-forth battle as both teams exchanged leads six times with six tied scores along the set. Menlo would catch a small four-point lead in the middle of the set but would lose it towards the final few points of the set. With their backs towards the wall, the Oak's would capitalize on a late surge fueled by three kills to take a 26-24 first set.

Momentum carried over as the Oaks held off Vanguard in another tightly contested set. Despite a few late errors, Menlo rallied on key attacking plays as well as obtaining a pair of aces to build separation and close the set 25-22.

The Lions roared back in the third, capitalizing on Menlo's attacking errors, swinging the momentum. Vanguard's late offensive push would keep the Oaks on their heels to take the third set 25-20, with the game now 2 sets to 1.

The fourth and final set was all Menlo. The Oaks would go on their match-best with a .333 hitting percentage. Vanguard would end up giving the Oaks two free points after the Lions would end up receiving two red cards, giving the Oaks a more comfortable lead. Menlo's serving game proved to be an issue for the Lions with the Oak's earning three aces to close the night out 25-12.

Record-Breaking Performance
Wojciech Nowak: Electric on both ends of play, the Polish sophomore would end up breaking this season's MPSF record for most aces in a single match with 9 on the night. Nowak would also obtain 11 kills, 11 digs, and two blocks for a total 21 points.

Mustafa Selçuk Uyar: The Turkish senior would earn 11 kills on the night along with 2 blocks, pushing the Oaks towards the finish line.

Ty Carson: Carson would post 11 kills of his own while adding 6 digs in the four sets played. His chemistry with Lawler created consistent firepower that created problems for Vanguard's back line.

William Lawler: The Oak's court general, Lawler dish out 28 assists while notching 7 digs defensively, for the Oaks. The junior's decision-making and ability to distribute the ball kept Menlo's offense fluid throughout the night.
