Menlo Men’s Volleyball Secures First NCAA Division I Victory Over the Banana Slugs

Atherton, CA – Menlo Men's Volleyball made history in their first match of the season by beating the UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Banana Slugs in 4 sets to earn their first NCAA Division I victory.
 

Firing on All Cylinders
In the first set of the match, the Oaks showcased precision and teamwork that left UCSC struggling to keep pace. The Oaks' offense proved lethal as they caught an early rhythm to earn 25-14 first set victory. Building onto their success from the first, the Oaks maintained their sharp execution in the second set. The Oaks powered through with 12 kills and hitting over a .250 hitting percentage, taking the set 25-17. In the third set of the night, UCSC found their footing and pushed the Oaks to their limit, the 14 lead changes in the set saw the Oaks fighting back but were unable to close out the night as the Banana Slugs won 24-26. Determined to finish the night on top, Menlo ended the final set of the night with 14 kills and a .294 hitting percentage to close the set 25-20.
 

Star Performers
Mustafa Selçuk Uyar did not disappoint in his debut for the Oaks. The senior dominated offensively and defensively by collecting 16 kills (.324 hitting %), 6 aces, and dominating at the net with 5 blocks, contributing 25 points in the match. William Lawler was able to orchestrate the Oak's offense with an incredible 36 assists. Lawler also was able to add 8 digs and 4 blocks to the stat sheet. Freshman Ty Carson also made some noise with 12 kills on the night. Carson was a machine tonight by also earning 4 aces and 3 blocks to assist in a historic night for the Oaks.

The Oaks will head down to Santa Barbra, CA in order to participate in the Asics Invitational. The Oaks will take on UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, and CSUN and the matches will take place from Jan. 9-11!
