Oaks Fall to Nebraska-Kearny & Westmont at the Otter Invitational

Seaside, CA – After going 1-1 yesterday at the Otter Invitational, the Oaks headed back to The Kelp Bed in Seaside, CA to close out another two games for the day, going up against the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney and the Warriors of Westmont College.

Menlo 0 – 3 Nebraska-Kearney
Menlo was unable to stop big multiple point runs from the Lopers and ended up dropping the first set 8-25. In the second set, Menlo started to find their stride as they closed down the Lopers lead with kills from different Oaks. Despite a strong second set, Nebraska-Kearney turned up their offense again and made it difficult for the Oaks to control the match. In the final set of the match the Oaks were able to tie the set 3 times, but Lopers setter Peyton Neff collected 16 assists in the set, making it a tough task to regain control. The Oaks had a good showing in their third match of the weekend and had one more chance to respond in the Otter Invitational.

Ayanna Barham led the Oaks in kills with 8 for the match, while also collecting 6 digs defensively. Setter Paige Harmann went on to dish out 13 assists to her teammates while also piling up 7 digs. Sophomore Libero Faith Oller played a crucial role for her team as she led the Oaks in digs with 12 in the match. The Oaks were able to get a taste of the Central region and scope out areas of improvement during a tough matchup!

Menlo 0 – 3 Westmont
Menlo was able to show a lot of heart in their final match at the Otter Invitational against the Warriors of Westmont. It was a back-and-forth battle in the first set, as it was unpredictable to determine who would take lead as there were seven lead changes! Unfortunately, the Oaks were unable to find their offense towards the end of the set losing it 21-25. The second set would get even crazier as the Oaks and Warriors were neck and neck all the way to the end. The Oaks had a two-kill momentum but were unable to close out the set, falling 23-25. In the final set, the Oaks again went point for point making the score 24-24 with a three-point run. The Warriors defense ended up being the deciding factor ending the match in three sets.

The Oaks were able to still perform outstanding despite the loss. Hannah Torres led the Oaks with 21 kills, as fellow Senior Paige Harmann gathered 27 assists and 13 digs. Libero Kanani Packer was able to also accumulate 11 digs for the Oaks, with fellow Sophomore Faith Oller collecting 9 digs and 4 assists for Menlo.
