Women’s Volleyball Wins First-Ever NCAA Division II Match Against CSU Monterey Bay

Seaside, CA – In a historic season opener at the Otter Invitational in Seaside, CA, Menlo Women's Volleyball celebrated their first ever victory in NCAA Division II with a win over the Otters of CSU Monterey Bay.

Menlo 3 – 1 CSU Monterey Bay
In their first match of the day, The Oaks performed outstanding and took control of the match in the first set after going on 6-point rally, making their lead 9-7. Closing out the first set, the Oaks were able to go on a 3-point run winning the first set 25-18. The Oaks then engaged in a back-and-forth battle with the Otters, dropping the second set to make the match 1-1. Menlo was able to find their stride again going on huge multiple point runs while ending the third set 25-14. In a nail-biting finish, the Oaks clinched the final set 25-23, securing their first ever NCAA Division II win.

Paige Harmann played a pivotal roll for the Oaks offense as she was able to dish out 24 assists in the match for her teammates. Leading the attack were Ayanna Barham and Hannah Torres, both contributing 13 kills each with Torres hitting at .545% of her attempts, and Barham collecting 16 on the match. On the defensive side, Maya Saole-Su'e led the team with 5 blocks on the match with Keely Grant collecting 4 for the Oaks. It was a well fought victory today as the Oaks were able to get some good looks in the first match in the new division!


Menlo 1 – 3 UC Merced
Despite a strong effort, the Oaks were still able to deliver a strong team performance against the Bobcats of UC Merced. Menlo opened the match with impressive energy, securing the 25-20 victory in the first set thanks to a well-rounded offense that included 4 aces. UC Merced were able to come back and take the second and third set to make the match 1-2. In the fourth and final set of the match, Menlo was unable to find the right momentum as UC Merced closed out the match 1-3.

Senior Hannah Torres appeared in all five sets and was able to lead the Oaks in the attack with 13 kills. Ayanna Barham delivered an outstanding all-around performance, tallying up 10 kills and 15 digs on the defensive side. Paige Harmann also supported Menlo with 22 assists and 11 digs in their final match of the day. Despite the result, the Oaks were able to set a solid foundation to build on as they continue the 2024 season!
