HAYWARD, CA – In a challenging matchup on Saturday evening, Menlo Women's Soccer faced off against Cal State East Bay, ultimately falling 0-3. While the scoreboard reflects a tough day for the Oaks, there were significant moments of determination and skill that highlight the team's potential moving forward.
Oaks Forced to Remain Defensive
Cal State East Bay showcased their offensive prowess, firing off 18 shots during the match. However, Menlo's starting goalkeeper, Giorgia Melcore, delivered an impressive performance with 10 critical saves, demonstrating her skill and tenacity in the goal. Melcore even had to face a penalty which ultimately fell in favor of the Pioneers. So far in the 2024 season, Giorgia has started each match for Menlo and has recorded 29 saves total. Her season high so far was in their first official game of the season against the Penguins of Dominican with 12 saves. Despite the defensive pressure, Melcore's efforts kept the Oaks in the game until the final whistle.
The Oaks' defensive line, anchored by center backs Taryn Thalhamer and Macy Swarts, put forth a commendable effort throughout the match, playing the entire 90 minutes and effectively managing the relentless offensive onslaught. Their teamwork, alongside center midfielder Lyla Devereaux, showcased a strong defensive foundation that will be vital as the season progresses. While Menlo struggled to create offensive opportunities, recording no corner kicks and managing only two shots on goal from Olivia Parlato and Liv Brunzell, the team remains optimistic.

Looking ahead, Menlo is eager to bounce back in their first PacWest Conference match against the reigning NCAA DII National Champions, the Sea Lions of Point Loma Nazarene, on Thursday, September 26th at 4 PM. This matchup presents an opportunity for the Oaks to apply the lessons learned and demonstrate a strong rally at home.
