ATHERTON, CA – In a thrilling match on Wednesday, Menlo Women's Soccer played to a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Fresno Pacific. Both teams demonstrated relentless effort towards attacking opportunities, but solid defensive back-lines from both teams resulted in a scoreless 90 minutes.
Scoreless After Quality Opportunities
Throughout the match, Menlo managed to earn four corner kicks but could not convert them into goals. They also had a fair share of free kicks after drawing 10 fouls against Fresno. The team demonstrated solid teamwork and determination during set-pieces and even got creative on a free kick outside the 18-yard box. Taryn Thalhamer cleverly faked a shot, prompting partner-in-crime Kawai Acopan to fire a hard kick towards goal but proved to be off by just inches of the frame.
Menlo fired off eight shots total, two of which were on target, thanks to standout efforts from outside back, Brynn McClymond, and midfielder, Lyla Devereaux. Despite their efforts, the Oaks were unable to find the back of the net.
Oak Standouts
The Oaks showcased their defensive dominance, with starting goalkeeper Giorgia Melcore delivering an impressive performance. After starting her third consecutive match for Menlo, she successfully handled all four shots faced to keep the scoreline intact. Her ability to command the box proved crucial in maintaining the clean sheet throughout the entire 90 minutes.
The defensive unit, anchored by Liv Brunzell, Macy Swartz, and Taryn Thalhamer, put in a commendable performance as well, consistently shutting down Fresno Pacific's attacking threats. Their resilience was evident as they helped the Oaks clear five corner kicks from the opposition, preventing any scoring opportunities from developing.
