Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Riley J. Siason

Menlo Women's Soccer Falls Short 0-1 to San Francisco State

San Francisco, CA -- In only their second match of the season, Menlo Women's Soccer fell 0-1 to Bay Area neighbors, the Gators of San Francisco in a tough ninety minute battle. The Oaks were able to showcase solid all -around effort and several promising offensive and defensive plays despite the loss. This result marks a competitive start to the season as Menlo looks to bounce back in their next fixture.

Oaks Press Early
In the first half, the Oaks were able to get their offense rolling early with 3 shots, 2 of which were on target, testing the Gators' goalkeeper but ultimately unable to find the back of the net for an equalizer. In the second half, the Oaks defense stood strong with three crucial saves from Giorgia Melcore to keep Menlo in the game. On top of her 3 saves, Melcore started the previous match collecting 23 saves, marking a total 15 saves on the year in the first two games! However, the team was unable to register any shots, as the Gators maintained control of the ball all the way to full-time.

Strong Opportunities & a Strong Backline
Taryn Thalhamer and Liv Brunzell delivered a solid performance, anchoring Menlo's backline by playing the full ninety minutes of the match. Their experience and composure assisted in keeping SF State's attack at bay, contributing to a great defensive effort throughout the match.

Junior midfielders Kaylin Gonzalez and Lyla Devereaux, were the key attackers in generating Menlo's only 2 shots on target which came early in the first half. Devereaux had the best chance to put the Oaks in the lead in the 30th minute, but the shot was unfortunately saved by the SF State goalkeeper. Their attacking efforts in the first half provided Menlo with promising opportunities, but the Gators' were able to take and hold on to the lead in the 40th minute.
