Atherton, CA-After days of rain, the sun finally begun to shine through on Wunderlich Field just in time for the Oaks doubleheader against the visiting Lumberjacks. Across the two games Menlo was competitive through the final at-bats but would drop both games against their visiting NCAA Division II opponents.
Game One: Menlo 3, Cal Poly 7
In the first matchup of the day the Oaks would strike first, scoring a run in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Maya Bivens-Sommerville. Bivens-Sommerville put together a strong outing at the plate through game one with two hits and two RBI's in three trips to the batter's box. Alongside Bivens-Sommerville, sophomore Lara Edeker also had a solid showing on offense. Edeker would draw a walk early in the game followed by a well timed sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure another point for the Oaks. Unfortunately, a seven point run from the second inning through the fourth was too much of a lead to overcome with Menlo dropping game one.
Game Two: Menlo 3, Cal Poly 4
Game two of the day would be a back and forth affair with both teams trading leads across all seven innings of play. Starting third baseman Bella Cortez put together a complete game on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Cortez would add two hits, two RBIs and a triple to her season long stats. She was also responsible for six putouts thanks to some solid glove work at first base. As for pitching Vivian Valencia put together a complete game, pitching all seven innings. She faced 34 batters striking out six and only walking one.Â
