LINCOLN, CA – Menlo Softball is at Whitney High School for another weekend full of round-robin- games on the road. On Friday, the Oaks began the day with a game against Oregon Tech which fell in favor of the Owls, 7-4. The afternoon matchup was against The College of Idaho Yotes who were able to tally a 10-2 victory over Menlo. The Oaks are right back at it in the morning for another round-robin!
Game 1: Menlo 4 - 7 Oregon Tech
Scoring began early for both teams in game one as each were able to add 3 runs on the board after the 1st inning. It was a game-tying 3-RBI homer over the center field fence from Bella Cortez, her first of the season, to score Emma Medina and Aliya Lubrin to make things, 3-3. The Owls and Oaks then tied it up again in the 5th inning after a two-out rally left Emma Medina and Bella Cortez at first and second. Maya Bivens-Sommerville singled through the left side to bring home Medina and even out the score, 4-4. In the 6th, Oregon Tech found a way to add three more runs over Menlo who had difficulties responding from there. Although the game ended in a 4-7 loss to the Owls, there were still moments of greatness on the field including Bella Cortez walking away with her first homerun of the season.
Game 2: Menlo 2 - 10 College of Idaho
The Oaks had difficulty building up offense in game two of the round-robin on Friday against the Yotes. College of Idaho was able to capitalize and score early with a 2-0 lead after the top of the 1st. The bottom of the 1st began with an Emma Medina single to center field to get things going. Bella Cortez followed with a single to the shortstop which advanced Medina and left both runners safe. A Bivens-Sommerville walk would load the bases for Grace Christian. The designated hitter did her job and grounded out to the shortstop to score Medina and get the Oaks on the board, 1-2. Another Oaks run came in the top of the 5th when Lara Edeker attempted to steal second, ultimately leading to a successful pickoff from the Yotes, but resulted in Grace Christian, who was on third, to steal home and score. Unfortunately the Oaks were unable to pull off the come back and took the 2-10 loss against the Yotes.
