Oaks Women’s Soccer Battles Azusa Pacific in Hard-Fought Senior Day Match, Narrowly Falls 0-1

ATHERTON, CA — On a ceremonious Senior Day at Wunderlich Field, the Menlo Women's Soccer team honored six graduating seniors, including Graduate Assistant Robyn Rowley, before taking on Azusa Pacific in a fiercely competitive match. Despite an early goal by Azusa, the Oaks fought valiantly, creating several promising late-game chances but ultimately fell short in a 0-1 loss. The Oaks' determination shone through in every minute of play, as they sought to cap off Senior Day with a comeback, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

The Oaks' Relentless Spirit Shines Through

After conceding an early penalty kick to Azusa Pacific, the Oaks regrouped and displayed unyielding determination. The match reached a boiling point in the final minutes of the second half, with Menlo earning three back-to-back corner kicks that kept the pressure on Azusa Pacific. Each corner resulted in promising opportunities, but the Cougar defense held firm, with their goalkeeper making a crucial save and defenders clearing each subsequent threat from the box. The Oaks' persistence and spirit were clear, giving the home crowd much to cheer for despite the narrow scoreline. Verenia Gonzalez was an attacking force in the Oaks midfield and fired off 2 shots. Kawai Acopan, Haley Dunham, and Olivia Parlato each took one shot on frame but none got past.

Team Statistics

Azusa Pacific was a huge threat up the sidelines but Menlo's solid central unit was firm through the chaos. Menlo recorded 6 shots, with 3 on goal, while Azusa registered 20 shots, but only 5 of which were on target. The Oaks had 4 corner kicks—all in the second half—while Azusa managed 10 corner kicks. Menlo's goalkeeper, Giorgia Melcore, made 4 key saves, matching the 3 saves made by Azusa's goalkeeper. The physicality of the game was evident, with 6 fouls committed by Menlo and 10 by Azusa, including two yellow cards for the Cougars and one for the Oaks. Despite taking the loss, this match was proof that the Oaks are a division II program that can put up a strong performance against a quality opponent.
