Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ally Salzwedel

Menlo Women’s Soccer Wraps Up Historic First DII Season with Hard-Fought Game Against Biola University

ATHERTON, CA – Menlo Women's Soccer closed out their inaugural season as an official Division II program with a spirited performance against Biola University. Despite a 3-1 final score, the Oaks displayed determination, heart, and a love for the game that was matched only by the support they had for each other. This season finale showcased the team's resilience and commitment, capping a year of growth and camaraderie.

Menlo's Lone Goal Highlights the Oaks' Fighting Spirit

Menlo's Verenia Gonzalez delivered a standout moment for the Oaks in the 59th minute of the game, scoring a top-shelf beauty from outside the 18-yard box after Kawai Acopan found her with an over the top pass. This goal brought the crowd to its feet, symbolizing Menlo's grit and refusal to back down. Verenia has been an attacking star for the Oaks this entire season, scoring 5 goals in 2024, and even executed a hat trick. In the same way, Acopan has been right beside her, leading the attack and looking for her teammates. Kawai would pass off her 6th assist today, proving her creative mindset on the pitch. Although Biola found the net twice more in the second half, Menlo continued to battle with unwavering spirit until the final whistle, proving that they are a team to watch as they continue to build in the DII ranks.

Fierce Eagle's Attack Met By Oaks Strong Back Line

Both teams kept the intensity high, with Biola recording 25 shots (10 on goal) compared to Menlo's 5 shots (4 on goal). Menlo held firm on defense, with goalie Giorgia Melcore making 6 impressive saves against Biola's 3. Biola led in corner kicks, tallying 12 to Menlo's 1, and committed 18 fouls, while Menlo had 6. The Oaks' resilience and teamwork were on full display, setting the stage for an exciting future in the PacWest.

Thank you Seniors!

Women's Soccer is already looking ahead to the next season, ready to build on the foundation they have laid. 5 Seniors will be graduating in the spring and will be missed from the program. The Oaks end the season with high hopes to bounce back in 2025 with experience in the competitive PacWest Conference!
