Menlo Women’s Soccer Puts Up a Fight but Succumbs to Vanguard Lions in Fierce 3-1 Contest

ATHERTON, CA – Menlo Women's Soccer hosted the once GSAC foe's of the Lions of Vanguard at Wunderlich Field on Thursday afternoon in their first fast off in the new conference of the PacWest. Despite a strong effort from the Oaks, they were unable to overcome the early lead that the Lions gained in the 90 minutes played. Menlo is looking forward to hosting their Senior Ceremony on Saturday, November 2nd!

Lions Outlast Oaks in Intense Battle

In a high-energy matchup, Menlo Women's Soccer fell to the Vanguard Lions, 1-3, in an action-packed game. Both teams exhibited relentless offense, with opportunities frequently exchanged at both ends of the field. Menlo's Haley Dunham scored the Oaks' sole goal in the 28th minute off of a corner kick, skillfully assisted by Liv Brunzell to temporarily level the score. After halftime, the Lions found the go-ahead and assurance goal that left Menlo in a deficit.

Giorgia Melcore, Menlo's goalkeeper, delivered a resilient performance with six saves, countering multiple on-target shots from the Lions. Menlo's persistent shot takers, including Dunham, Verenia Gonzalez, and Liv Brunzell, pressed the Lions' defense but could not overcome their keeper's efforts.

By the Numbers: Game Stats Reveal Competitive Edge

Menlo registered 11 shots, 5 of which were on goal, continuously challenging Vanguard's keeper throughout the game. Vanguard, however, led the offensive push with 21 shots and 10 on target, translating their accuracy into three goals. The Oaks earned two corner kicks and were able to take advantage of one, while the Lions had six opportunities. Fouls were relatively even, with Menlo committing seven and Vanguard five, though the game's intensity escalated with yellow cards for both teams late in the second half, adding a strategic edge to the final minutes. Despite their efforts, Menlo fell short with Vanguard securing the win.
