Menlo Women's Volleyball Fights Hard but Falls to Hawaii Hilo in Four Sets

ATHERTON, CA – The Menlo Women's Volleyball team faced off against Hawaii at Hilo inside of Haynes-Prim Pavilion in an intense four-set PacWest match up. Despite a valiant effort from Menlo, the Oaks would end up falling to the Vulcans pushing them to their limit.
 

Fighting to the End
Menlo would start the match with a different tempo and dominated the floor from the jump. The Oaks were able to go on an early six-point running making the match 9-4. Their blocking was an effective part of the set, earning 2 total blocks and pressured Hilo into multiple attacking errors. Menlo was also able to collect 2 service aces as well, the Oaks clean execution throughout the set gave them a solid 25-17 set win. In the second set, Hilo was able to bounce back with authority. The Vulcans improved their offensive efficiency significantly and took the set 25-12. Menlo was unable to answer back in the third set. Hilo was able to get on their offense quick once again and the Oaks weren't able to take control, dropping the set 11-25. The final set was much more competitive, Menlo came out with renewed energy, matching Hilo point-for-point early on. The set saw multiple ties and lead changes, but ultimately Hilo's offense helped them pull ahead in the final moments. The Oaks push hard but would fall short, with Hilo closing the set and the match 21-25.
 

Star Performers
Giulia Marinelli was one of Menlo's offensive leaders, contributing a total 11 kills with an impressive .360 hitting percentage. Hannah Torres was another standout for the Oaks, recording 9 kills and 4 total blocks with 2 of them being solo blocks. Beatrice Manzon was the main setter for the Oaks as she was able to contribute 15 assists to her teammates. The main libero for the night was Julia Tena, as she was a defensive standout collecting 20 digs on the night. She also contributed to important points offensively and earned 4 service aces. The Oaks key players gave them the ability to showcase their resilience and abilities despite the overall outcome.
