Menlo Women's Soccer Shows Grit in Narrow 0-1 Battle Against Hawaii Pacific

HONOLULU, HI – Menlo Women's Soccer put up another valiant effort in a hard-fought 0-1 defeat to Hawaii Pacific University on Saturday. The Sharks managed to find the back of the net in the opening seconds of the match, but the Oaks never wavered in their determination. Despite the early setback, Menlo's tenacity and relentless attack kept the game within reach throughout the 90 minutes.

Acopan in Front of Her Home Crowd

Junior center midfielder Kawai Acopan, a native of the island of Hawaii, delivered a standout performance in front of her home supporters. With a large crowd cheering her on, Acopan played with purpose and intensity, leading the Oaks' attack. She registered four shots, all of which were on target, as she looked to equalize the early Sharks' lead. Acopan has continued to be a strong threat on the Oaks offense, leading the team in shots, shots of goal, and assists. She is still relentlessly trying for that first goal of the season. Acopan's strong showing gave the Menlo offense momentum throughout the match, keeping the pressure on Hawaii Pacific's defense. Teammates Liv Brunzell, Verenia Gonzalez, and Haley Dunham each contributed a shot on frame as well, but the Sharks' goalkeeper proved up to the task on every attempt.

Shining Oaks

Menlo showed resilience throughout the match, generating 10 total shots, seven of which were on target. Though Hawaii Pacific fired off 18 shots, only five of them challenged Menlo goalkeeper Giorgia Melcore, who made four critical saves to keep the Oaks in contention. The defense, led by starting back line Brynn McClymond, Liv Brunzell, Taryn Thalhamer, and Macy Swartz, fought hard to neutralize the Sharks' offense, especially in the second half, when the Oaks successfully defended four of Hawaii Pacific's six corner kicks. On the attacking end, Menlo earned four corner kicks of their own but was unable to capitalize on those opportunities.

Up Next…

Menlo remains determined as they seek their first victory of the PacWest season. Their next opportunity comes on Tuesday, October 15th, when they face off against Hawaii Hilo at 6 p.m.
