Menlo Women’s Soccer Battles Hard but Falls 2-1 to Chaminade in Honolulu

HONOLULU, HI – Menlo Women's Soccer team put forth a determined effort but fell short in a 1-2 loss to Chaminade University on Thursday afternoon. After a scoreless first half, the Silverswords gained the advantage with two second-half goals, but the Oaks showed heart and resilience, fighting back with a late goal from Brynn McClymond. Menlo still looks forward to two more games during this 10-day business trip to the Islands.

McClymond's First Goal of the Season

Menlo found themselves trailing 0-2 after Chaminade scored in the 53rd and 69th minutes, but the Oaks continued to push for opportunities. In the 86th minute, Menlo earned a corner kick, which was initially cleared out of the box by the Silverswords' defense. Verenia Gonzalez regained possession for the Oaks and played the ball down the line to Kawai Acopan, who had taken the corner and remained in position for another attacking moment. Acopan delivered a high cross into the box where Haley Dunham leaped for a header attempt, striking the crossbar. The rebound fell to Brynn McClymond, who was unmarked at the back post, and she calmly slotted the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.

This late goal provided a surge of momentum for Menlo, who pressed hard in the final minutes but were unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle. The Oaks will look to build on this late-game energy as they continue their conference campaign.

Defensive Unit Calling For Backup

Menlo's goalkeeper Giorgia Melcore faced intense pressure throughout the match, as Chaminade consistently applied offensive pressure, tallying 20 shots, 10 of which were on target. Melcore was a standout in goal, recording eight crucial saves to keep the Oaks within striking distance. Her reflexes and composure under fire were pivotal in limiting the damage, as Chaminade's relentless attack required all hands on deck defensively.

The Oaks' backline, consisting of four starting defenders—Brynn McClymond, Liv Brunzell, Verenia Gonzalez, and Taryn Thalhamer—played the full 90 minutes, forming a solid barrier in front of Melcore. Together, they worked tirelessly to block shots, cut off passing lanes, and clear dangerous balls from the box. The Menlo defense was often forced to regroup and call in additional support to help neutralize Chaminade's aggressive forward play, stepping up to extinguish any threats before they could become more dangerous.

While Chaminade's offensive unit was relentless, the Oaks' defense showed teamwork making critical stops and allowing the team a chance to fight back late in the game.

Up Next….

It is a quick turnaround for the Oaks as they face their attention towards their next matchup on Saturday, October 12th at Hawaii Pacific. Kick-off in Oahu is set for 10pm PST, so set your alarm clocks and get ready for a late-night thriller!
