Baseball Splits Friday Doubleheader with Vanguard, Wins 10-9 and Loses 13-11

ATHERTON, CA

The Oaks turned on the offense in the final doubleheader of the season Friday afternoon, winning the first game of the day and dropping the second. Their records are now 8-31 overall and 4-17 in conference play.

Game 1: Menlo 10 - 9 Vanguard University

Menlo's bats hummed for 9 innings in the first game of the day, with the Oaks notching 14 hits. Three players had a double in the game: Blake Dompier, Jonathan Charboneau, and Matt Leong. Anthony Masetti logged a triple, and Menlo had home runs from Jonathan Charboneau (a 2-run shot) and Jake Koeper (a 3-run blast).

Overall, the standout performance came from left fielder Jonathan Charboneau, who finished 3-5 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBIs. He is second on the team leaderboards in hits, with 41, and RBIs, with 33. He is also tied for second in runs scored, with 24. Charboneau has been electric since joining the Oaks roster earlier this year, and has kept his nose to the grindstone through the ebbs and flows of a grueling 40-game season. He is also a dependable defensive asset, boasting a 1.000 fielding percentage and 86 putouts on the season.

Game 1 starter Brock Moore, the crown jewel of the Menlo pitching staff, was sublime in his 3.0-inning appearance. In his time on the mound, he allowed just 1 hit and 1 walk, and no runs, while striking out 6 batters. Moore's season strikeout total stands at a stellar 70, with a K/9 rate of 12.27. Major League Baseball scouts, radar guns and notebooks in hand, descended on Cartan Field today to watch Moore work his magic, with the right-hander's fastball hitting 98 miles per hour in a performance that will surely get his name circled on more than a few draft boards.

Game 2: Vanguard University 13 - 11 Menlo

The second game of the day was also an offense-heavy affair, with the Oaks scoring 11 runs on 12 hits and the Lions totaling 13 runs on 13 hits.

In one of the highlights of the season, Sage Pera stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 6th and, with the bases loaded, rocketed a ball over the outfield fence for the Oaks' first home grand slam of the year. Pera has cemented himself as one of the first names on the lineup card for head coach Alex Hoover; in his debut season at Menlo, the slugger from Templeton leads the team in home runs, with 11, and RBIs, with 41.

Right-handed reliever Robely Corsi kept things close in the final inning of the game with an efficient 9-pitch, 8-strike performance. With the Oaks trailing by 2, Corsi shut down the Lions offense, striking out 1 batter and allowing no runs. His 22.1 total innings pitched this season are the second-most by any Menlo reliever, with 13 strikeouts recorded by the junior from Edmonds, Washington.

Menlo will host Vanguard for a single game tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 AM PT. It will be the final game of the Oaks' season, preceded by a ceremony to honor the team's 12 graduating seniors.
