Menlo Softball Sweeps Jessup in Mid-Week Doubleheader

ATHERTON, CA -- It was a slugfest today at Wunderlich field where Menlo swept Jessup taking Game 1, 3-2 and Game 2, 8-0 in 6 innings! The Oaks totaled 8 hits in Game 1 and a whopping 16 hits in Game 2. 

Game 1: Menlo 3 - 2 Jessup
Menlo earned their first run to tie the game early in the bottom of the 1st. Jolena Velasquez, who went 2-3, was on third after a triple to right center field. Clutch-hitter freshman, Emma Medina, was up to bat with a runner in scoring position. She RBI singled up the middle for an easy tag-up score for Velasquez to make it 1-1. 

They kept it rolling in the bottom of the 2nd when Emma Wilson opened the inning with a double out to left field. Hailey Roloff got a bunt down to advance Wilson to third base and Alexandra Attard followed with a RBI sacrifice-fly to Jessup's center fielder to score Wilson. Oaks were ahead 2-1. 

Menlo ended up sealing the deal and ultimately scoring the game winning run in the bottom of the 5th inning. Jadalee Takara tripled to left center field to start some momentum for the Oaks. Jolena Velasquez RBI singled through the right side to perfectly execute the score for Takara. Jessup held it to 3 runs but after a Jessup score in the 7th, Menlo was able to close the game and end 3-2. 


Game 2: Menlo 8 - 0 Jessup (6 innings)
Menlo's bats were hot in Game 2 where Menlo had a season-high 16 hits in 6 innings. One trend in the Oaks scoring in Game 2 were base hits to score. Menlo was able to get the ball in play in challenging spots on the field to ultimately end the game early after the mercy rule applied. 

The Oaks took the early lead in the 2nd inning when Bella Cortez singled through the left side to start things off. Hailey Roloff then singled through the left side as well to advance Cortez to second base. Alexandra Attard did her job and singled through the middle to score Cortez. Sofia Quintero followed quickly with a 2-RBI single to bring Attard and Roloff home and make it 3-0.

Bella Cortez had a huge 2 RBI triple to right field to score Grace Christian and Emma Medina in the bottom of the 5th. Bella Cortez ended up going 4-4, 1 run scored and 3 RBI. Another Oak that pulled through today was Alexandra Attard who went 3-3, 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. 

The 6th inning was an all out grind to end the game for the Oaks. Senior, Kianna Lum, had bases loaded after an Attard single, Quintero walk, and Takara bunt single with no outs. She was able to get the ball in play to RBI single and score Attard. Grace Christian was also able to single to third base to score Quintero. And to end it all, Bella Cortez singled through the right side to score Takara for an 8-0 final score!

Menlo is on the road this weekend for their doubleheader against San Diego Christian in Santee, CA on April 22 starting at 12pm! It all comes down to these last few games to decide who will advance to the playoffs so the Oaks are making it exciting!
