Softball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader to the Vanguard Lions

ATHERTON, CA -- The Vanguard Lions took both ends of a doubleheader at Wunderlich field on a sunny Friday afternoon. Vivian Valencia had 6 strikeouts in Game 1. It was powerful pitching from the Lions mixed with strong fielding that pulled them through the victories.

Game 1: Menlo 1 - 2 Vanguard
Pitching was tight today at Wunderlich field as the Vanguard Lions barely took the victory over the Oaks in Game 1. The starter in the circle for Menlo was senior Vivian Valencia and she went 4.1 innings pitched with 6 strikeouts. So far this season Valencia has made 14 appearances and earned 40 strikeouts. The Lions also had a great day in the circle challenging the Oaks in the box. Menlo only had 3 hits in the 7 innings from Jadalee Takara, Alexandra Attard, and Emma Wilson.

The Oaks run of the game came in the bottom of the 5th when Emma Wilson led off with a single through the right side. She ended up advancing to third base after a wild pitch and a ground out by Alyssa Rodne. Jolena Velasquez was up to bat with 2 outs against the Oaks with a runner in scoring position. She was able to get the ball in play and make it to first off of an error by their second baseman and ultimately brought Wilson in for the score! In the end, the Vanguard held Menlo to just the single run to end the first match up, 2-1.

Game 2: Menlo 0 - 4 Vanguard
Vanguard continued their fierce performance and took Game 2, 4-0. It was a tough outing for the Oaks who were only able to get four hits in the entire 7 innings of the game. Lions pitching did not allow any walks either so Menlo did not get a chance to start a rally. The four hits came from Emma Wilson (1-3), Alyssa Rodne (1-3), Jadalee Takara (1-3) and Sofia Quintero (1-2).
