Softball Upsets #19 OUAZ in Rainy Sweep to Open Conference Play

ATHERTON, CA -- Menlo Softball upset #19 OUAZ in a rainy day sweep, 10-0 in 5 innings completed and 7-0 in 7. Despite the uncontrollable conditions of the on-and-off rain the two teams were able to complete a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Friday, March 10th.

Game 1: Menlo 10-0 OUAZ in 5 innings
In an effort to beat the expectedly worse conditions on Friday, the Oaks came out confident and pulled off a run-rule 10-0 in 5 innings! OUAZ landed into San Jose Airport this morning and 8am and made the trip straight to Menlo College for the showdown. All of Menlo's runs came in the 1st through 3rd innings. It started in the 1st with Designated Player, Alexandra Attard, who doubled to center field batting Hailey Rollof and Bella Cortez. That gave Menlo the early 2-0 lead with Emma Wilson up the bat next. She followed Attard with another double up the middle to bat Attard and Christian in.

In the 2nd inning, Attard hit a 2-RBI triple to bring Christian and Rolloff in again! An error by the Spirit helped the Oaks bring Attard in and allowing Emma Wilson to reach first base. This allowed Emma Medina to single off into center field and scoring Wilson. Followed by Sofia Quintero to capitalize on another OUAZ error to reach first and scoring Jolena Velasquez.

For the Oaks last run of Game 1, Emma Wilson reached on a fielder's choice to score Grace Christian again to seal Menlo's 10-0 victory! Brianna Gonzalez pitched all 5 innings with 6 strikeouts, 1 walk, and only 2 hits.

Game 2: Menlo 7-0 OUAZ in 7 innings
After a 20 minute break the teams agreed to fight it out one last time through the storm! Alyssa Rodne led the Oaks going 2-2, 2 RBI, and a run scored. Hailey Roloff also went 1-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Rolloff was called out at 2nd after attempting to turn her single into a double. In this attempt, it allowed teammates Sofia Quintero and Alyssa Rodne to score for the Oaks to make it 5-0. In this match up 7 different Oaks scored a run. Today was by-far one of the Oaks best showing this season and hopes are high for Saturday's doubleheader to continue at this pace!

Up Next...
Since this doubleheader was completed early, the Oaks have an off day tomorrow and are taking the field against RV Arizona Christian on Saturday March 11 at 10am. The weather permits possible delays/cancelations but the Oaks are determined to get it done so stay tuned for any updates that may come with this weather!
