Glendora, Calif. – Menlo College Football took its final road trip of the 2014 season on Saturday and fell by a final of 0-54 behind a huge rushing attack from the Azusa Pacific Cougars and a turnover-prone offensive night. It was a rocky close to a challenging season for the youthful Menlo squad as the Cougars forced six turnovers and outgained Menlo 532 to 144. Menlo falls to 3-8 on the campaign while NCAA Div. II Azusa Pacific concludes the regular season 10-1.
Senior running back Terrell Watson gave the Oaks defense trouble all night long and finished with a record-breaking 338 rushing yards on the evening. 259 of those yards came in the second half, good to break the NCAA Div. II record for rushing yards in a half (previously 229). The big play proved to be the Achilles heel of the Oaks all game long. Azusa Pacific scored on plays of 30 or more yards on three different occasions, a number of which were set up by Menlo turnovers.
Menlo struggled to mount any significant offensive drive all game and were bitten by the turnover bug, throwing five interceptions and surrendering a fumble. Part of that was the tenacious defense of the Cougars, who, in addition to forcing the turnovers, sacked Menlo quarterbacks five times and forced a safety.
A bright spot for the Oaks was the play of running back Nic Slater who carried the ball 15 times for 50 yards and also pulled down four passes for 43 yards. Brandon Soohoo was the next leading receiver with three catches for 34 yards. Jared Hakuole was the next leading rusher with Menlo with eight carries for 25 yards.
Saturday's season finale brings a close to the careers of 15 seniors including: Keith Bowman, Jake Fohn, Cam Grad, Kaiiron Richards, Jared Hakuole, Craig Hartford, Dominic Jackson, Mark Peruzzaro, Ray Roach, Brandon Soohoo, Vince Synder, Luamata Tagaloa, Jerardo Torres-Rodriguez and Mitch Young.
