Brendan Rooney enters his fourth season at Menlo after two consecutive seasons posting 16 or more wins. The 2022-2023 season was filled with multiple highlights with Rooney at the helm, including three victories over nationally ranked opponents, multiple players entering the Menlo record books, and being ranked as high as 24th in the entire nation.
In just two seasons of competition with the Oaks (Menlo did not compete during the 2020-2021 season due to COVID) Rooney compiled a record of 33-23. He has overseen the development of multiple players who set program records with four athletes joining Menlo’s record book this season alone. Across five seasons as a collegiate head coach, Rooney has coached and developed two NAIA All-Americans and 15 All-Conference Selections.
Before taking over Menlo’s program, Rooney spent three seasons as the head coach at Cal Maritime. Rooney amassed a solid record of 52-34, becoming the fastest coach to reach 50 wins in program history, and the second winningest coach all-time.
Entering the 2023-2024 season Rooney holds a career head coaching record of 85-57, good for a 67% winning percentage.Â
Prior to his time as head coach of the Keelhaulers, Rooney spent three seasons as the Scouting and Recruiting Coordinator, and three seasons as an Assistant Coach at Maritime. While serving as an assistant, Maritime won the CalPac Conference Title three times. Â
Rooney knows a thing or two about coaching success on and off the court, as he spent the past three seasons as Cal Maritime's Champion of Character Liaison, overseeing the entire athletic department's pursuit of the NAIA's Five Core Values. He also coached 29 athletes who were honored as members of the Cal Maritime Dean's List and 16 athletes who were honored as members of the Cal Maritime President's List.Â
Academically, Rooney’s teams continue to shine in the classroom at Menlo. During the 2022-2023 season, Menlo Men’s Basketball had five players named GSAC Conference Scholar Athletes and NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athletes. Men’s Basketball was also home to one of the 2023 Collis Steere Academic Excellence awards which honors top student-athletes across all Menlo’s sports programs.
