Hockman Picks up 5 Blocks at the Net in Battle Against CUI

IRVINE, CA – In their second game of a two-game series against the Golden Eagles of Concordia University-Irvine, the Oaks showed grit in their defeat in four sets, moving to 2-2 in MPSF Conference play.
 
Match Recap
The opening frame saw the Oaks struggle offensively, falling behind mid-set with opportunities from Xavier Cordova and Vojtech Simunek. With signs of coming back from with their backs on the wall, CUI would take the set 25-20 to go up one.
 
The Oaks would battle more early on, fighting to gain some momentum as CUI carried their offense momentum from the previous set. Menlo would perform their best offensively with 10 kills that led to a .353 hitting percentage. Mark Ensalaco led the offense with 3 kills on 5 attempts with 2 digs. Kai Van Harren also contributed with 2 kills to help spark some light, but the Golden Eagles' offense continued to apply pressure and closed out the frame 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Oaks responded with their strongest set of the night in the third. Menlo tightened their defense at the net while the offense found rhythm through Ensalaco and Mathias Durfee. A late surge of three blocks from Garrett Hockman was enough momentum to make a comeback from being down 21-20 to take a 25-23 set.
 
In the fourth set, CUI would control the early stages with the Oaks right behind them. Half way through, the Golden Eagles would create enough cushion despite several late points from Durfee to close out the match 25-18 to end it.
 
Oaks' Top Performers
  • Mark Ensalaco led the attack with 10 kills, adding three blocks while totaling 11.5 points.
  • Middle Garrett Hockman was a monster at the net with 5 block assists, three of them coming in the third set.
  • Vojtech Simunek added an efficient performance with 7 kills on a .455 hitting percentage, while also contributing at the with 2 blocks

The Oaks will head back home to take on no. 7 nationally ranked Pepperdine inside of Haynes-Prim Pavilion on March 15th at 3PM.
