Oaks Drop First Conference Matchup of Season Against CUI

IRVINE, CA – The Menlo Men's Volleyball team traveled down to southern California to Irvine for their third MPSF conference matchup this season, taking on Concordia University-Irvine inside of the CU Arena. Despite competitive stretches early in the match, the Oaks would fall to the Golden Eagles in straight sets.

Match Recap
The Oaks would come out aggressively to start the match, jumping out to an early lead behind kills from Vojtech Simunek and Mathias Durfee while setter Joshua Friedman ran the offense. The Oaks held pace throughout most of the set, but CUI's serving was the contributing factor on top of a late surge in the set that allowed the Golden Eagles to best Menlo 25-21.

The second frame featured the Oaks pick up their offense, hitting a .242 in the set highlighted by kills from Xavier Cordova with 5 and Mark Ensalaco with 4. The Oaks would fall behind early in the set, fighting for runs to tighten the gap. Gabriel Ocasio Lopez would make an appearance midway through to switch up the tempo at setter, helping trim the deficit late. However, CUI capitalized on transition opportunities to secure another set over the Oaks 25-22.

Looking to extend the match, the Oaks continued to fight in the third, Cordova remained consistent on offense, being the only Oak to earn kills. CUI found another gear offensively, hitting over .400 while also causing issues at the service line to create more separation in the set. The Golden Eagles would go on to close the match with a 25-16 set win.

Key Performances
  • Xavier Cordova led the attack with 12 kills on a .429 hitting percentage while also collecting 4 digs and 2 block assists defensively.
  • Mark Ensalaco would earn 5 points on the night, tallying 5 kills on a .308 hitting percentage on top of earning an ace
  • Two setters controlled the Oaks offense in Joshua Friedman with 12 assists and Gabriel Ocasio Lopez with 11 assists.
