ATHERTON, CA – Menlo Baseball continued its opening series of the 2026 season Saturday afternoon at Cartan Baseball Field, hosting Cal State East Bay in a single nonconference contest. Despite an early push from the Oaks, the visiting Pioneers used several multi-run innings to pull away late, handing Menlo a 3-17 defeat.

Cardinal's Two-Run Homer Highlights Oaks' Effort
Cal State East Bay struck early, plating three runs on four hits in the top of the first to put Menlo in an immediate deficit. The Oaks were limited to a single in their half of the inning and fell behind 0-4 after the Pioneers added another run in the second. Menlo responded in the bottom half of the frame when a throwing error and patient at-bats loaded the bases, allowing Shane Aldridge to draw a walk that brought home the Oaks' first run.
Menlo trimmed the deficit to one in the third inning. Matt Morrison jumpstarted the rally with a double to left, continuing his hot bat streak from day one. Morrison leads the Oaks in batting average with an astounding .875 after going 7 for 8 in the first two games of the season. DJ Cardinal followed with a two-run home run to right field to make it 3-4. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Cal State East Bay answered with a solo home run in the fourth and then broke the game open in the fifth, capitalizing on walks, wild pitches, and timely hits to score five runs and extend the lead.
The Pioneers continued to add insurance in the later innings, while the Oaks picked up additional base runners but could not push another run across. Morrison paced the offense with three hits, and Cardinal's third-inning homer accounted for Menlo's only multi-run scoring play. Defensive substitutions and pitching changes in the final frames helped Menlo work through the remainder of the contest as the game concluded 3-17.
