15 Triples Power Menlo's Impressive Comeback
It was a tale of two quarters to start as the first belonged to Biola and their 11-2 start which was ironically stopped by the first 3-pointer from Saenz as a foreshadowing of things to come. A pair of triples in the final two minutes had the Eagles in front 22-14 after one quarter, but another Saenz deep shot initiated a 9-2 run in the second quarter that cut the margin to four.
Saenz then blitzed Biola with two more 3-pointers in a 30-second span to give the Oaks their first lead at 32-31 and it would remain a one-point game at halftime with Menlo up 36-35. Soon the Oaks' first four made shots of the second half were all from distance as senior guard
Alberte Frisch had the first two in essentially the opening minute then senior guard
Jayonnah Carter added another for the 45-37 advantage.
The margin held around six points for the remainder of the third quarter as Frisch had seven points in the final five minutes and redshirt freshman guard/forward
Kimberly Ceron-Romero added a layup as well. Though the score was tied twice in the early part of the fourth, it would not return there until the end due to an 8-3 BU burst that was interrupted only by another Saenz triple.
Layups by Ceron-Romero and sophomore forward
Zoe Carrillo helped set up the clutch bucket by Saenz that banked in from steps beyond half court with five seconds left on the clock. With that game-tying score, Menlo forced five more minutes with overtime where the Oaks dominated right away. An 8-0 surge was fueled by Carrillo's layup, a 3-pointer from graduate student forward
Frida Schmidt, and the eighth triple by Saenz for a six-point lead. The Eagles responded with their own shot from long range though they were held scoreless over the final two and a half minutes as Menlo secured the 79-74 win.
