Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hot Opening Quarter Fuels Dominant Win For Menlo Women’s Basketball

ATHERTON, CA – Absolutely on fire during a 10-1 run to end the first quarter, Menlo Women's Basketball never trailed during Tuesday evening's Pacific West Conference rematch with Chaminade that ended with four Oaks scoring in double figures and ultimately a final of 71-53 inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion.

Oaks Highlights
-The trio of Zoe Carrillo, Alberte Frisch, and Mehkia Applewhite each had 14 points apiece
-The second double-double of the year for Applewhite included 11 rebounds and four steals as well
-Frisch added eight rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block
-Jayonnah Carter dealt out five assists to go with four steals and five points

Menlo Drops 27 Points On 66 Percent Shooting From The Field In First Quarter
Up 10-4 after senior guard Alberte Frisch hit two 3-pointers inside the Oaks' first seven possessions, Menlo soon got four quick points from sophomore forward Zoe Carrillo to establish a 10-point lead. Chaminade fought back to cut the margin to one point, however, the final two minutes belonged to the home team as four made free throws bookended three consecutive layups combining the efforts of senior guards Mehkia Applewhite and Jayonnah Carter. The 27-17 advantage held at the end of what served as the Oaks' second-highest point total in a single quarter (behind only the 31 against Cal State East Bay on Nov. 20) came on over 66 percent shooting from the floor.

The 10-1 surge to end the first became 20-1 as Menlo had Applewhite and sophomore forward Taylor Westbrook providing a one-two punch to begin the second frame. From a 43-26 halftime lead, the Oaks kept their collective foot on the gas pedal with others stepping in such as graduate student forward Frida Schmidt knocking down a triple or redshirt freshman guard/forward Kimberly Ceron-Romero converting a three-point play both during an 8-0 run early in the second half.

A 12-0 push by the Silverswords to end the third quarter helped the visitors reduce the difference to single digits in the fourth before a 12-3 burst capped by two more Schmidt 3-pointers in less than a minute stifled the comeback attempt for the 71-54 victory.

"Boom! We got the win today," Carrillo said. "I want to thank God and my teammates – I'm really glad to be here and just appreciate the confidence my teammates have in me."

Up Next
Closing out the season this Saturday, Feb. 28 at home versus Vanguard, the Oaks will celebrate their senior class with a ceremony at 11:45 a.m. ahead of the noon start time.

"It has been a good season overall – there are things we will continue working on, but I'm excited for next season and we definitely want that win on Saturday," Carrillo said.
