Second-Half Goals Lift CSU San Bernardino Past Menlo in CCAA Game of the Week

SAN BERNARDINO, CA – Menlo Men's Soccer faced a tough test Friday in the CCAA Game of the Week, falling 0-3 to the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino. The Oaks delivered a scoreless first half, keeping the hosts off the scoreboard through the opening 45 minutes before San Bernardino broke through in the second half with three goals to secure the victory.

Oak Highlights

  • Menlo held CSU San Bernardino scoreless through the first half.

  • Goalkeeper Vebjoern Madshus helped keep the Coyotes at bay with two key saves throughout the match.

  • Roy Rosenberg, Tim Schwarz and Manuel Portillo each put early pressure on the San Bernardino defense with shots on goal.

  • Menlo continued to battle late, earning corner kicks and creating attacking opportunities.

Scoreless First Half

The Oaks came out ready to compete, testing CSU San Bernardino goalkeeper Cody Lindeman early in the contest. Rosenberg put a shot on target in the 11th minute, followed by Schwarz in the 25th minute, but Lindeman turned away both attempts. Portillo also looked to create an opportunity in the opening minutes as Menlo worked to establish its presence in the attacking third.

Menlo's defensive effort kept the game scoreless at halftime, but the Coyotes found their breakthrough just four minutes into the second half. Anthony Luna opened the scoring in the 49th minute, assisted by Titus Alviso and Nevin Rueegger. Diego Lopez doubled the advantage in the 64th minute with assists from Alviso and Andrew Alonso, before Rafa Fonseca added the third goal in the 67th minute off a feed from Ty Kerns.

Madshus continued to compete in goal despite the second-half surge, recording saves on attempts from Luna and Hugo Gomez late in the match. On the attacking end, Portillo tested Lindeman again shortly after halftime, while Janne Spangenberg looked to generate another opportunity in the 83rd minute. Despite the effort, the Oaks were unable to find the back of the net against the Coyotes.
