Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. – Following a pair of high-scoring affairs, the Menlo men's soccer team found a different way to win. The Oaks got revenge over a Fresno Pacific team that had already taken a non-conference match from them, picking up three key points in the conference table ahead of one of the most difficult weekends of the season.

By The Numbers

  • Menlo put eight shots on goal to Fresno Pacific's seven.
  • Hugo Few scored in the 33rd minute, proving to be the matches' only goal.
  • Diego Ruiz assisted Few's goal for his second in three matches.
  • Vebjorn Madshus made six saves in a clean sheet.

Oaks Get Revenge Over Sunbirds

Despite being outshot, 20-8, Menlo had strong chances early on, with three shots on goal in the matches' first 25 minutes. Few, who has now contributed at least one point in four straight matches and in six of his last seven, scored off a corner kick 34 minutes in.

Few, a transfer from Hofstra University now in his second year with the Oaks, is tied for fourth in the CCAA in goals and tied for second, alongside teammate Tim Schwarz, with 16 points. The only player in the conference ahead of the two is Fresno Pacific's Zion Vaughn, who had a brace against the Oaks in early September, but was held to just three shots (none on goal) in the rematch.

Each of Menlo's eight shots were on target, the first time that has happened for the Oaks in the Division II era. In comparison, the Sunbirds finished with 20 shots, but only seven were on goal. Madshus finished with a season-high six saves in his second shutout of his freshman season. He has now picked up three straight victories, all in conference play.

Madshus' final save was arguably his finest, off a chip shot into the box from the Sunbirds' Beau Brusseau in the 76th minute as Madshus dove to his left to parry it away. Few picked up a red card in the 87th minute, his first of the year and the Oaks' second as a team, but the Oaks survived the final three minutes down a man.

Up Next…

Conference play continues on the road as the Oaks take on No. 6 Cal State San Bernadino and Cal Poly Pomona away from home next weekend. The Oaks take on the sixth-ranked Coyotes at noon next Friday.
