Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Austin Ota

Two Set Pieces the Difference in CCAA Loss to San Marcos

ATHERTON, Calif. – Menlo Women's Soccer fell against Cal State San Marcos, the 10th-ranked team on the West Coast, on Thursday afternoon. The Menlo defense allowed just two goals, one on a penalty kick and another on a set piece from just outside the attacking area while taking three corners and putting six shots up.

Oak Notes

  • Caroline Cordes played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves, her most since the Oaks' opening match of the season.
  • The freshman center back pairing of Tae Detwiler and Hailey Stevanus joined Cordes playing full-time.
  • 21 different Oaks saw the pitch.
  • Playing a bench-high 56 minutes, Avery Grieve placed a shot on goal and took two shots overall.

Defense Tightens Through Middle Third

San Marcos' Karli Sikes scored a penalty goal at 11:18 to put the Cougars up, 1-0, early on. But the Menlo defense righted the ship after a strong save by Cordes at 32:05, holding the Cougars without a shot over the next 32 minutes. In that span, the Oaks outshot their opponent, 5-0, with a shot on frame from Avery Grieve and a try from Reese Leichtfuss just missing the crossbar at the end of the first half. On a set piece from the top of the box with under six minutes to play, Cougar midfielder Luca Puccio rang the crossbar with the scrum crossing the byline for the putaway goal.

Up Next…

The Oaks head south to Fresno to take on the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds. Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM on Ramirez Field, the home of the Sunbirds, on Saturday afternoon.
