Menlo Men’s Basketball Fights Back but Falls Short Against Sunbirds

FRESNO, CA – Menlo Men's Basketball displayed grit and perseverance in a hard-fought battle against Fresno Pacific University on Valentines Day. After a tough first half that put the Oaks behind, they responded with a strong second-half push. Despite closing the gap and keeping the game within reach, Menlo ultimately came up short, falling 70-74 at the Special Events Center in Fresno.

Menlo's Statistical Leaders

  • Nick High: Led the team with 14 points, shooting 6-for-14 from the field, including 2-for-4 from three-point range. Also contributed 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

  • Salim Arikat: Provided a key offensive spark with 11 points off the bench, including two three-pointers.

  • Landon Seaman: Dominated the glass with a team-high 7 rebounds while adding 9 points.

  • Nick High: downed 14 points while also contributing 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block on defense to keep the Oaks in the game.

Left it All on the Court

The game started with Menlo struggling to find their rhythm, as the Sunbirds jumped out to an early lead. The Oaks trailed 35-40 at halftime, struggling to contain Fresno Pacific's inside scoring and fast-break points. However, Menlo came out with renewed energy in the second half.

Menlo improved their shooting percentage to 45% (28-for-62) for the game and knocked down 9 three-pointers on 42.9% efficiency. They capitalized on second-chance opportunities, scoring 13 points off offensive rebounds. The Oaks also scored 11 points off turnovers, showing their ability to convert defensive stops into quick offense.

With under five minutes remaining, Menlo cut the deficit to just four points after a clutch three-pointer by Nick High. Salim Arikat followed with a layup, bringing the score to 68-72. Despite their late-game push, Fresno Pacific held strong at the free-throw line, sealing the game in the final moments. The Oaks outrebounded the Sunbirds 32-30 but could not overcome their early struggles.
