Exhibition Sees Menlo Men’s Basketball Challenge NCAA DI UC Davis

DAVIS, CA – The first look at Menlo Men's Basketball was a positive one as contributions came from up and down the roster in what was an unofficial start to the season that NCAA Division I UC Davis won 96-69 inside University Credit Union Center on Monday.

"I am proud of the team and of them fighting and battling," said Head Coach Jamison Montgomery. "For our first real test, I love how we battled through adversity. A lot of film for us and opportunities for us to become an even better team are next. Go Oaks."

Oaks Highlights
-Kai Brown finished with a game-high 18 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field
-Against his former team, JaMaal Unuakhalu finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks
-The six assists from Devon Woods were also a game high

First Half
After sophomore guard Kai Brown nailed triples for Menlo's first two baskets of the contest, a three-point UCD advantage became double digits, but senior forward JaMaal Unuakhalu quickly emerged against his former team. He put in five of the Oaks' next seven points and rejected a pair of shots before the difference briefly expanded to 12 only to be met by an 8-2 surge with Brown, junior guard Devon Woods, and senior forward Nick High all getting in on the offense.

The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, settling with UC Davis ahead 42-34 at the break. As three different Oaks scored to keep the sides close through the first seven minutes of the second period, junior forward Meek Ater highlighted the stretch with two layups. Five straight points from sophomore guard Quentin Thompson helped keep the Menlo offense flowing, but a 7-1 run over the ensuing two and a half minutes proved to be the difference as the Aggies went on to prevail 96-69.

Up Next
With its preseason now complete, Menlo will officially begin its 2025-26 campaign against Central Washington on Nov. 14 in Seaside.
