The first quarter was highlighted by a 7-0 run that, thanks to scores by senior guard
Alberte Frisch, graduate student forward
Frida Schmidt, and a triple from sophomore guard
Madeline Bader, had Menlo in front 14-8. That margin was held and added to when senior guard
Jayonnah Carter nailed a 3-pointer early in the second and became seven points at 21-14 on a follow-up score by sophomore forward
Zoe Carrillo. Freshman guard
Angel Allen's first collegiate basket had the Oaks continuing to roll, but an 8-2 surge by SF State put them ahead 27-25 moving into halftime.
Seven unanswered points on buckets by Carter, Schmidt, and Frisch returned the lead to Menlo in the second half and, though the Gators regained the advantage, it was just a two-point ballgame after Allen knocked down a pair of free throws in the waning seconds before the fourth quarter. Three triples then propelled SF State to an 11-point lead in the first five minutes of the final frame yet a 10-2 rebuttal brought Menlo to within three after senior guard
Mehkia Applewhite's fifth assist found Carillo for a layup. Another 3-pointer and free throws ended up sealing the 62-55 win for SF State as Menlo still once again demonstrated its determination to fight back.
