Menlo Men's Soccer Drops First PacWest Match to Point Loma Nazarene

ATHERTON, CA -- In a challenging opener to their PacWest Conference campaign, Menlo Men's Soccer faced off against Point Loma Nazarene University, falling short with a final score of 0-2. Despite a spirited effort, the Oaks struggled to capitalize on their chances, and look to find the back of the net coming up this Saturday.

Productive Offense Meets Strong Sea Lions Back Line

The Oaks displayed promising offensive maneuvers throughout the match, but the Sea Lions' structured defense made it difficult for Menlo to find the back of the net. Throughout the game, Menlo maintained significant possession in the attacking third, demonstrating their intent to score. However, despite their efforts, the Oaks were unable to convert opportunities into goals, with Point Loma capitalizing on two key chances.

Oak Standouts

Menlo's goalkeeper, Martin Fiala, showcased his skills by making eight crucial saves over the course of the match, keeping the Oaks in contention until the final whistle. In a standout performance, Roy Rosenberg, who started as an outside back, took the initiative with four shots directed at the Sea Lions' goal.

Up front, Mattia Celant posed a constant threat with three attempts to score, though he was thwarted by Point Loma's goalkeeper and back line. The defensive unit, consisting of Rosenberg, David Stuber, and Ian Brusewitz, held strong, navigating through 18 shots and defending six corners to maintain their integrity throughout the match.

As a team, the Oaks earned four corners and launched a total of 11 shots, highlighting their offensive intent and willingness to challenge the Sea Lions' defense. However, in the end, Point Loma executed their attempts, giving the Oaks some takeaways that can help sharpen their tool kits.
