Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Drew Barton

Another Sweep Sees Oaks in Championship Match at GSAC Tournament

Surprise AZ-Menlo Men's Tennis is firing on all cylinders and have secured a spot in the GSAC Championship match thanks to their fifth consecutive sweep. This time the Oaks faced off against the Firestorm of ACU but just like their first matchup, Menlo outmatched their Arizona rivals and pulled off their second sweep of ACU on the year.

As they have all year long Menlo's doubles pairings gave the team a strong start to the match winning two of three battles. Once singles play got underway it would be the Oaks fourth, fifth and sixth slots that came up big to seal the Oaks victory. When the trio of Tanguy Calicis, Asger Ildor and Ruben Russwurm play like they did today the team can put together a deep rotation of six solid players. On a day where Menlo's two all-conference players and freshman of the year were locked in tightly contested duels, others were able to handle business. Calicis would win in two sets albeit relatively competitive ones winning by a total score of 12-7. Meanwhile, Ruben Russwurm would have the most decisive win on the day defeating his ACU counterpart 12-3 on the day. The last Oak to win would be Asger Ildor. The Danish sophomore pulled off a two set sweep as well with consecutive 6-4 scores to clinch the Menlo's sweep.

Up Next…

The stage is now set for a showdown with the top seeded Westcliff Warriors. The Oaks haven't lost a match since last playing against Westcliff and have won nine consecutive matches. The Warriors are one of the best programs in the country with their team ranking among the top five in the NAIA. The Oaks have their work cut out for them but if the past month is any indication they are more than ready!
