Surprise, AZ-It may only be the first game of conference play but the Menlo Oaks and OUAZ Spirit may have competed in the match of the year. It was a clash between the fourth and sixth ranked programs in the nation and this highly touted contest more than lived up to the hype. Across five sets the entire match was filled with high level play, clutch moments and passion in droves. In fact, every single set was within three points of each other with the final two requiring extra points to decide the victor. While the Oaks may have been unable to secure the win, it was a performance that every single one of the players and coaches should be proud of. The boys proved, in hostile territory, that they more than belong among the ranks of the top programs in the nation.
An All-American Effort from One of the Greats
Any fan of Menlo Men's Volleyball is more than familiar with the name Konrad Stoklosinski. Number 10 for the Oaks has solidified himself as an all-timer in the record books but today only furthered his standing as a primer player in the nation. Across five sets Stoklosinski posted 22 kills, three assists and a .268 hitting percentage. Time and time again the Polish native found a way to stop an OUAZ run or secure an Oaks lead. It is no surprise that we often speak about the exploits of Stoklosinksi but the Oaks reigning All-American left it all on the court in what may be the most exciting match of the season.
Underclassmen Show Up When it MattersÂ
This type of game is always difficult at the moment given the energy and willpower both teams exert in such a close battle. Yet, the Oaks young guns were more than up to the task of taking on a highly ranked opponent. Will Lawler has twice been named the conference setter of the week and lived up to that billing once again. The sophomore posted 46 assists as the orchestrator of Menlo's offense. On the defensive side of the net Lawler was also impactful with a team high 14 digs. Meanwhile, Julius Stiemer and Wojciech Nowak have continued their impressive seasons as well. As a pair they combined for 27 kills, 26 digs and three solo blocks. This Menlo team is starting three players still relatively young in their college careers. There is no doubt the future is bright for the Oaks.
Up Next…
There will be little time to waste before the boys are back on the court again tomorrow. They will take on Arizona Christian as they look to get back in the win column. Losses are always tough, especially ones that come down to the wire. But, rest assured that there is no doubt from Menlo fans that the team emptied the proverbial "tank" and gave one of the best teams in the nation all they could handle.
