Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Drew Barton

Women’s Basketball Pulls Out Gritty Win at OUAZ 75-71

Surprise, AZ-Being the top team in the conference with a perfect 7-0 record at the halfway mark has plenty of advantages but also puts a target on the teams back. Menlo Women's Basketball found that out thanks to a down to the wire, gritty game against the OUAZ Spirit. Yet, despite the best efforts of the Spirit, Menlo showed why they are currently the top team in the GSAC and ranked as the 25th best squad in the NAIA. When it mattered most the Oaks came up with big stops, clutch free throw shooting and showed the level of poise that is required to win big games.

Well Rounded Team Effort

Unlike most of the games during this winning streak, the Oaks offense had a hard time finding their usual rhythm across the game with only a 39% field goal percentage as a team. But, the team managed to have multiple players come up with big offensive outings. Jasmyne Huggins has put together a big breakout year for her final season in Menlo blue! Again she came up big with a team high 17 points on a strong 57% from the floor. Huggins once again scored in a variety of ways, be it in transition, in the post or from the midrange. For good measure she added five rebounds to the boxscore as well.

Fellow seniors Kiara Brown and Jordyn Rosette would also put together solid scoring outings scoring 16 points and 15 points respectively. For Brown, she wasn't able to find her usual efficiency from the floor but made up for it with a great showing from the line. On nine free throw attempts Brown hit eight of them and was still her usual self on the glass with another nine rebounds. Meanwhile, Rosette played with her usual sense of pace and quietly put together a well rounded performance. She was responsible for a large part of Menlo's success from the ark with three made deep shots. She also continues to climb up the leaderboards for single season steals with another four to her resume.

Up Next…

Eleven games has equaled eleven straight wins as Menlo Women's Basketball extends their reign atop the conference. Most of the team's wins have been in convincing fashion but close matchups like this tend to be great for building toughness and resilience with postseason aspirations growing. The Oaks will be right back to action this coming Saturday with a matchup against Arizona Christian as they look to wrap up their roadtrip 2-0!
