Defensive Frenzy Comes Down to Points Converted
The Oaks started strong, outscoring Vanguard 18-11 in the first quarter behind efficient shooting and tight defense. Menlo's bench provided a boost with 9 points, helping to establish an early lead. However, Vanguard found a rhythm in the second quarter, cutting into Menlo's lead and setting the stage for a closely contested second half.
Both teams displayed tenacious defense, with Menlo recording 6 steals and Vanguard forcing 23 turnovers. Despite the turnovers, Menlo capitalized on their offensive opportunities, shooting a solid 40% from the field compared to Vanguard's 32%. Rebounding was a key factor, with both teams pulling down 41 boards. Mehkia Applewhite's dominance on the glass stood out, and Menlo's 26 points in the paint underscored their aggressive play inside. The Oaks' ability to get to the free-throw line also kept them competitive, converting 13-of-22 attempts.
Ultimately, Vanguard's three-point shooting and ability to score off turnovers (20 points) gave them the edge in a tightly fought game. Menlo will aim to build on this performance as they prepare for their next PacWest challenge.
