Women’s Volleyball Falls to Point Loma in Final Match of the Season

San Diego, CA – The Menlo College women's volleyball team concluded their 2024 season with a hard-fought match against Point Loma at the Golden Gymnasium. Facing one of the top teams in the PacWest Conference, the Oaks showcased their ability to hang in with the top teams in their first season competing at the NCAA Division II Level.
 
Set-by-Set Breakdwon
Menlo came out strong in the first set, showing determination against Point Loma's aggressive start. The Oaks displayed solid defensive efforts with crucial digs and blocks but struggled to find consistency in their attack. Despite trailing early, Menlo rallied to keep the set close before falling 25-19. The second set saw a surge in Menlo's offensive rhythm, as the team notched 16 kills with an impressive .263 hitting percentage. The Oaks demonstrated grit by staying within reach of Point Loma, engaging in multiple ties and lead changes. However, critical errors late in the set allowed Point Loma to edge out a 25-20 win. In the final set, the Oaks continued their effort to challenge Point Loma, but the opposition's consistent attack and blocking proved too much. Menlo's hitting percentage dipped a tad bit and despite moments of creativity and fight, the set ended 25-15, sealing the match for Point Loma in straight sets.
 
Key Performers
Hannah Torres led the team offensively with 9 kills, showcasing her ability to step up in critical moments despite facing a tough defense. Another Oak in Ayanna Barham demonstrated her versatility, contributing 8 kills with a hitting percentage of .226 while adding 10 digs and a service ace, reflecting her all-around impact on the court. Hawaii native Maya Saole Su'e was also a key figure at the net, adding 8 kills and 2 block assists, while also delivering a service ace, highlighting her two-way play. The last Oak to standout was Beatrice Manzon who orchestrated the offense with 15 assists while contributing 6 digs on defense.


Looking Ahead
With the 2024 season in the books, Head Coach Lesli Akeo can reflect on a year of growth and adjust to the NCAA Division II competion. The team's effort and progress throughout the season laid a solid foundation for the program's future success. The future looks promising for Menlo Volleyball as they continue to elevate their presence in the competitive PacWest Conference.
